I have been participating in an annual quilting based social media event. It runs through March and each day of the month has a different topic. One of the topics, ‘your first quilt’ found me rummaging through some old memories and nostalgic thoughts as I stumbled upon my very first quilt.
Back when I was just starting out with quilting, I bought a kit for a triangle quilt from a magazine. Despite not being particularly fond of the colours, I dove into the project with enthusiasm, unaware of the intricacies of the craft.
Reflecting on it now, I chuckle at how naïve I was — I hadn't the slightest idea what "bias" meant back then! The instructions were for the quilt to be tied and not quilted and as a result, the quilt bears the scars of my novice sewing attempts. It is complete with holes from both my early mistakes and a dog who saw it as somewhere comfortable to sleep when I wasn’t looking.
While I may not display it proudly for its visual appeal, my first quilt holds a special place in my heart—a tangible reminder of where my passion for quilting began and how far I've come since then.
Whether you have been quilting for years or are just starting, remember to enjoy the journey.
Happy quilting!
